This is a true American dessert that is featured in the disney-animated movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarves – maybe some of you remember Snow White’s escape from the Evil Queen and finding refuge at the residence of the Seven Dwarves. Her ability to bake on top of her acceptance of each unique personality of the dwarves created a wonderful connection of friendship and protection.

These apple dumplings are made with homemade pie dough & granny smith apples and sweetly seasoned with date sugar & cinnamon.

You’ll have the whole house filled with a luscious baked apple aroma and bring a fairytale element to the dinner table. It’s a perfect dish to make for dessert on Thanksgiving or a holiday.

Where did this dessert really originate? It was created in the Northeast region of America, particularly Pennslyvania during apple harvest season and became a sensation especially among the Amish.

This was one of my favorite desserts that I remember my Mom making only when I was very young, and pairing it with vanilla ice cream. It’s a true gem recipe and absolutely divine.

RECIPE

Baked Apple Dumplings with Date Sugar

Ingredients

For the Dumplings:
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter (for the dough)
  • 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter (for the apples)
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 6 granny smith apples (peeled & cored)
For the Baking Sauce:
  • 1 cup of date sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of water

Directions

For the Apple Dumplings:
  1. Set the oven to 400 degrees Farenheight
  2. In a mixing bowl, add flour, baking powder, salt, and unsalted butter
  3. Using your hands or a mixer, mix in the butter thoroughly
  4. Add milk and vanilla extract
  5. Mix the dough until it becomes soft and not sticky
  6. Section the dough into 6 equal portions
  7. Cover each portion of dough with plastic wrap
  8. Flatten each dough portion in the wrap with your hands (this will make it is easier to roll when it’s done chilling)
  9. Add the dough to the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes
  10. Peel and core the apples
  11. In a small bowl add and mix only the date sugar, cinnamon, and salt from the baking sauce ingredients
  12. Roll each apple into the bowl of sweet seasonings until completely covered
  13. In the small bowl, add water, mix, and set aside
  14. Add a small piece of butter (around 1 tablespoon each) into each apple core (cut the stick of butter into 8 equal portions and use 6 of them)
  15. Set the seasoned apples to the side in a baking pan
  16. Remove one of the chilled dough sections from the fridge
  17. Add it to a floured-surface to roll out the dough as thin as you can (don’t be afraid to work the dough when it is in a chilled state – press, roll, and the dough will flatten)
  18. When the dough is rolled completely, cover it over the top of the apple and push the ends of the dough to stick into the open core at the bottom of the apple
  19. Place the covered apple into the baking pan and repeat the process for the rest of the apples
  20. Pour the baking sauce over each dumpling
  21. Set the baking pan in the oven at 400 degrees Farenheight to bake for 40-50 minutes (place them at the bottom-most level of the oven)
  22. Halfway into the baking process, use a spoon to re-pour the baking sauce over each dumpling if you like them to be more moist
  23. Serve traditionally with vanilla ice cream and fruit
