For me, when I think of the fairs and carnivals that I enjoyed during my childhood in the U.S., I think of churros! The jam or chocolate filled fried dough delights that were so crunchy & fluffy, yet light enough that I could eat one after the other.

My all-time favorite kind have always been the strawberry-jam filled churros 🙂

Back then in the early 2000’s they were only a dollar each! And this is because they’re very simple to make with only flour, water, and salt. The jam filling and sweetened crust is what makes these so addictive!

In this recipe, I follow the Mexican-style churro recipe that excludes eggs or butter and developed the best sweetening mix for the fried crust: brown coconut sugar, brown monkfruit sweetener, and cinnamon! It tastes exactly like the traditional ones I know and love, if not better. May you enjoy them too!

The Best Dairy Free Mexican Style Churros, Only Flour, Water, Salt, Vanilla Extract - No Sugar!

RECIPE

Dairy Free Mexican Style Churros

Ingredients

For the Churros:
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 4-6 cups of olive oil to fry
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of brown coconut sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of brown monkfruit sweetener

Directions

For the Churros:
  1. In a large pot, add water and salt over medium heat
  2. Bring the salted water to a rolling boil
  3. Turn off the heat, then immediately add vanilla extract and mix into the water
  4. Immediately add in the flour and mix until it solidifies
  5. Remove the dough from the pot and knead while warm on a working surface until smooth
  6. Section the dough into 8 portions and cover with a towel to keep from drying
  7. Push each dough section through a piping bag with a star tip or a commercial churro-shaper product
  8. Shape and cut each churro to have a length of 8 inches (The length of the churro can vary)
  9. In a large pan, add olive oil over medium heat
  10. After heating the oil for 5 minutes, add a batch of 2 uncooked churros (Overcowding the pan will release more moisture and reduce overall crispiness)
  11. Fry for 2 minutes, with 1 minutes on each side (Flip the churro halfway)
  12. Remove the cooked churros and add to a drying rack
  13. In a small bowl, mix cinammon, brown coconut sugar, and brown monkfruit sweetener
  14. Cover the churros in the sweetener & cinnamon mix
  15. Fry the rest of the batches and cover with the sweetener & cinnamon mix
  16. Serve filled with naturally-sweetened jam or a vegan chocolate sauce
